Respiratory Alkalosis:

Causes: 

  • 1)Hyperventilation as in anxiety
  • 2) Mechanical Ventilation
  • 3) Salicylates poisoning /Sepsis
  • 4)Liver disease
  • 6)Severe anaemia 


Parametter:

  • pH = > 7.4 
  • pCo2 = less then 35 mmHg 

Clinical Features:

  • 1)dizziness.
  • 2)bloating.
  • 3)feeling lightheaded.
  • 4)numbness or muscle spasms in the hands and feet.
  • 5)discomfort in the chest area.
  • 6)confusion.
  • 7)dry mouth.
  • 8)tingling in the arms.

Investigations: 

  • 1)ABG 
  • 2) Serum creatinine 
  • 3)Serum Electrolyte 
  • 4)LFT 
  • 5)CBC 
  • 6)ECG

Rx: 

  • O2,supplement 
  • treatment of underlying cause of Hyper ventilation 

If severe then Ventilator support 

  • Reduce anxiety
